Can Holistic Coaching Help My Health Condition?

If you've been living with a chronic health condition, you may know what it's like to leave a doctor's appointment with another prescription but very little guidance about what you can do to help yourself feel better.

As a holistic nutrition coach who has lived with rheumatoid arthritis for most of my life, I believe there's an important piece of healthcare that too many people are missing: the opportunity to become active participants in their own well-being.

Holistic coaching doesn't replace medical care or promise to cure chronic illness. But it can help you understand how daily habits influence your health, identify practical changes, and build a lifestyle that supports your medical treatment.

What Is Holistic Coaching, and How Can It Help With Chronic Health Conditions?

Holistic coaching takes an individualized approach to wellness, considering the whole person rather than focusing exclusively on a diagnosis or symptom.

While conventional medicine diagnoses and treats health conditions, holistic coaching focuses on everyday factors that can influence how you feel and function, including:

•Nutrition and digestive health

•Physical activity and daily movement

•Sleep quality and circadian rhythms

•Stress management

•Lifestyle habits and behavioral changes

These areas are interconnected. Poor sleep can affect energy and appetite. Chronic stress may influence digestion and sleep. Nutrition plays an important role in metabolic health and the body's normal inflammatory processes.

The goal isn't to overhaul your life overnight. It's to identify which factors may be affecting your well-being and make realistic, sustainable improvements.

For someone living with a chronic condition, this approach can be especially valuable because medical treatment and lifestyle choices serve different but complementary purposes.

Why Holistic Coaching Can Be an Important Part of Chronic Illness Management

Here's something that continues to amaze me.

People can spend years struggling with symptoms, visiting specialists, receiving diagnoses, and trying medication after medication without ever having a meaningful conversation about nutrition or lifestyle.

I'm certainly not suggesting medications are unnecessary. Many are essential, and some are lifesaving. What concerns me is how often people are left believing that medication is the only tool available to them.

When that happens, they may overlook something incredibly important: they still have opportunities to influence their health and quality of life through daily choices.

That doesn't mean people are responsible for developing their conditions or that they can simply choose to get better.

It means they deserve to understand what they can do to support their bodies alongside appropriate medical care.

My Personal Journey: A Diagnosis at 17

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at just 17 years old.

For decades, I accepted that this was simply my reality. Autoimmune diseases run in families, and genetics play an important role in susceptibility.

I largely resigned myself to living with the disease, never seriously considering that my daily choices might influence how I experienced it.

That began to change when I was 51.

How Helping My Daughter Changed My Perspective

My daughter has psoriatic arthritis, another autoimmune condition.

When she became pregnant and couldn't take her regular medications, I began researching the gut microbiome, hoping to better understand ways to support her health.

What I discovered sparked a deeper interest in the relationship between gut health, immune function, nutrition, and lifestyle.

And I started asking myself a question I hadn't seriously considered before: What if I could make changes that would help me feel and function better, too?

Over the following year, I made intentional changes to my diet, movement, sleep, and stress management. These weren't overnight transformations. They were adjustments that required consistency, patience, and attention to how my body responded.

Over time, I experienced meaningful improvements and was able to reduce my medications. I even experienced rheumatoid arthritis remission for approximately a year. Eventually, following a significant bout of influenza, my disease became active again.

I share that because it's important. Lifestyle changes didn't cure my rheumatoid arthritis, and my experience doesn't mean everyone will achieve remission or reduce medication. Medication adjustments should always be made with the prescribing clinician.

But those changes helped me discover that I had more influence over my day-to-day well-being than I had previously understood.

That realization ultimately became a driving force behind my work as a holistic nutrition coach.

Can Holistic Coaching Help With Autoimmune Conditions?

Holistic coaching may help people living with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or psoriatic arthritis improve aspects of their well-being and develop habits that make daily life more manageable.

Depending on individual needs, coaching might focus on:

•Building balanced, nutrient-dense eating habits

•Supporting digestive comfort

•Improving sleep quality and consistency

•Incorporating appropriate physical activity

•Developing practical stress-management strategies

•Recognizing patterns that influence energy and well-being

While lifestyle changes aren't a cure, nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management are important components of overall health.

And sometimes, the most beneficial place to start isn't nutrition at all.

A Client's Experience: Improving Fatigue Without Changing Her Diet

One of my clients came to me struggling with severe fatigue associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

What made her situation interesting was that she already ate a relatively nutritious diet and exercised regularly.

She was doing many of the things people are commonly encouraged to do, yet she was still exhausted. As we explored her daily habits, we identified something worth addressing.

Although she was getting plenty of sleep, her sleep-wake schedule wasn't particularly consistent with a natural circadian rhythm. Our bodies operate on internal biological clocks that help regulate sleep, alertness, hormones, and other important functions. According to the National Institutes of Health, disruptions to these natural rhythms can affect overall health and may worsen existing health conditions.

Rather than recommending another diet or more intense exercise, we focused on a few practical changes:

•Getting natural outdoor light within an hour of waking

•Establishing a more consistent sleep-wake schedule

•Incorporating short, energizing movement flows throughout the day

Within the first four weeks, she reported tangible improvements in her energy!

Her experience doesn't mean coaching treated her thyroid disease or that everyone will respond similarly.

But it illustrates something fundamental to my approach: We shouldn't assume everyone needs the same changes.

Sometimes, the most helpful adjustment is one a person hasn't considered because they've been focusing on something else entirely.

What a Holistic Nutrition Coach Does Not Do

One misconception about holistic nutrition coaching is that a coach simply hands you a meal plan, recommends supplements, or tells you which foods to eliminate.

That's not how I approach my work.

Understanding Your Individual Needs

Before our first meeting, clients complete a comprehensive questionnaire covering their diagnoses, medications, supplements, eating habits, sleep, movement, stress, and readiness for change.

This helps us establish a starting point and identify opportunities for improvement.

The key is finding changes that are both potentially helpful and realistic.

Learning What Works for Your Body

Making a change is one thing. Learning whether that change is helping is another.

We pay attention to how you're feeling, what you're noticing, and whether the adjustments are improving your daily life.

Rather than following a habit simply because someone claims it's healthy, we evaluate whether it's actually serving your needs.

This process takes time and attention. It's not a quick fix or miracle cure. It's about developing awareness and building sustainable habits.

Can Holistic Coaching Help Reduce the Need for Medication?

This is an understandable question, especially for people who continue experiencing symptoms despite medical treatment.

Holistic coaching isn't intended to replace medications or medical supervision.

Some people may experience improvements that lead their healthcare providers to reassess treatment plans. Others may continue needing the same medications while benefiting from healthier habits and improved quality of life.

I experienced medication reductions during my own journey, but that doesn't mean everyone will.

My focus isn't on getting clients off medication. It's on helping them create daily habits that support their health alongside prescribed treatment. Any decisions about medication changes belong to the client and their medical provider.

Is Holistic Coaching Worth the Investment?

I understand why someone might hesitate to invest in holistic coaching.

People living with chronic conditions may already spend significant amounts on appointments, prescriptions, supplements, special diets, and products promising better health.

But I encourage people to think about coaching differently. You're not purchasing another miracle product or following the latest wellness trend. You're investing in learning skills and developing habits that can support your health for years.

And there's another benefit I believe is often overlooked!

The Ripple Effect of Healthier Habits

When one person begins making meaningful lifestyle changes, those choices can influence everyone around them.

Perhaps a family begins eating more nutritious meals because one household member is making dietary changes.

Maybe a spouse starts taking evening walks because their partner has made movement a priority.

Or perhaps children develop healthier habits because those behaviors become part of their family's routine.

Sometimes, others join in simply because they see positive changes and want similar benefits.

That ripple effect can extend far beyond the person who originally sought coaching. To me, that's one of the most valuable aspects of this work.

Is Holistic Coaching Right for You?

Holistic coaching may be worth exploring if you:

•Have a chronic health condition and want to understand how lifestyle habits may affect your well-being

•Still struggle with fatigue, digestive concerns, stress, or other symptoms despite medical treatment

•Feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition and wellness advice

•Have difficulty maintaining healthy habits

•Want individualized guidance rather than another one-size-fits-all plan

•Want to take a more active role in supporting your health

A holistic nutrition coach doesn't diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, or replace licensed healthcare professionals. Coaching provides education, guidance, support, and accountability to help you make meaningful changes within your individual circumstances.

You May Not Control Your Diagnosis, But You Can Explore What Is Within Your Control

If there's one message I hope you take away from my experience, it's this: Your diagnosis doesn't have to be the end of your involvement in your own health.

I spent more than three decades believing rheumatoid arthritis was something that happened to me and that medical treatment was my only option.

I'm grateful for the medications and healthcare professionals who have helped me throughout my life. But I wish I'd understood much earlier that my daily habits could play a meaningful role in supporting my health.

That's what I want others to discover. People deserve to be active participants in their health journey.

Improving your well-being isn't always about finding the next treatment or wellness trend. Sometimes, it's about learning to pay attention to what your body needs and making small, consistent choices that help you live and feel better. And those choices can have an impact that extends well beyond you!
